Interview with my artist
1.
Why
did you want to become an artist?
Music
is in my blood, ever since I was young I have loved listening to music and I
was always inspired to produce my own songs. I always had the passion and the
drive to create unique sounds .I feel performing was one my strengths and the
two just tied together naturally. My uncle and my cousins are involved in the
music scene and they motivated me to push myself and push boundaries with my
music.
2.
What
has been your biggest achievement?
Everything
I do I see as an achievement. Every performance, all my concerts I see as an
achievement. The best thing in my career so far is being sponsored by Talent
Academy. I was honoured when sponsored me, it was a good feeling to know a big
company could see and support my talent.
3. What was the key to your success?
NEVER STOP GOING AND ALWAYS BELIVE IN YOURSELF. Look after fans and they’ll look after you.
4. How is it like having a big fan base?
It’s a part of being famous (laughs). I am grateful to my fans and thank them for following and listen to my music. I always greet my fans like they are my family, you have to show respect to them and you will get respect back. The bigger the fan base the more money you get (laughs).
5. How did you feel when reaching the final of Oxford’s Got Talent, and how did you manage with the disappointment of not winning the competition?
It’s not a disappointment, I see coming second from hundreds of people, I see this as an achievement. The winner Owais, he’s a close my friend and on the day of the final he borrowed my shoes which I think is why he won the competition, just joking. I see myself as a winner I managed to secure sponsorship and Owais didn’t even though he won.
6. How do you separate your private life and from your social life?
I don’t, Music is my life. It has its place in all aspects of my day to day be that work, pleasure on my own or with friends.
7. What should we expect from latest album Mix-tape?
It’s being released in the summer but there will be many singles which will all be in my Mix-tape. Hope you enjoy my latest songs but they are going to be AMAZING. It will be mostly Hip-Hop but with some mainstream music as that the current trend and that the kind of music which will increase my popularity.
8. Which person influenced you to become a hip-hop/rap artist?
Lupe Fiasco. His music was real from which I got associate myself with. He was different from other artist at the time that was the reason I liked him. I still listen to his music as it gives me inspiration to achieve what he has and become like him one day.
9. What is like performing in front of a crowd?
The moment before going on stage can be nerve racking as you don’t know what to expect and what kind of crowd is out here, your mind has to be focused on the task ahead. When you’re on the stage you just have to have fun and enjoy yourself because if you enjoy yourself other will as well. Every stage as its own thrillers. The biggest stage I performed was at the O2 academy and it’s exciting as you have many people in the crowd, so you enjoy yourself as you are performing against other famous artists.
10. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
“HOPEFULLY SIGNED”, I want to be signed by a big record labels like Rocca-fella or aftermath. That’s my dream. I want to be signed by someone who will sign me as I am and let me record my music the way I want. Signed my someone who will grant me the right to publish my own music and just LET ME BE ME. I am currently signed by a local record label called BG Records they help and support me with my music.
11. What is your message/advice to other upcoming artist?
“Be yourself, you will always have hatters and whatever they say should come in through one ear and go out the other”, as there are many people who will envy you and will want to bring you down so don’t listen to them. You also have to do whatever you want and not let others people’s opinions change you. Live your dream and stay true to your sound and yourself.

Interview with HMK
This is the interview I have conducted with HMK. The interview will be written up on my double page spread. This interview told me about the life of HMK.

FONTS for masthead
Here are some of the fonts I found which can be used on the front cover for the masthead. The masthead for my magazine needs to be bold and stand out because I have been looking at various Hip-Hop/Rap magazines which gave me and idea of what type of font I should use. The conventional font for a Hip-Hop/Rap is something that standout and is bold. I will be using the 3rd font on the list above because it will get the attention of the reader as it will stand out with other magazines.

Shot List
Here is my shot list, this will help to take the pictures for my magazine, this informs me different angle form which I need to take the pictures and from and other important things like what accessories should be used. I gathered the shot list by looking at other Hip-Hop/Rap magazines and looked at the conventional photos included in the magazine, and from this I picked out the photos which I like for my magazine and will now take those pictures but with my artist.

Here is my flat-plan for my double page spread(DPS) . On the double page spread one page will consist of a pictures of HMK my cover artist. I have also not decided on the colour scheme. The fast-plan of the DPS will help me structure my the DPS. It also gave an insight on the difficulties faced in planning a magazine and how to overcome them.
Flatplan- Content Page
Here I have the flat-plan for my contents page. I have not yet decided on what coloured will be used. I have decided to use 3 pictures on the contents page with also have an editors letter. By making a flat-plan for the contents page it will make it easier for me to know where everything will go. I also learnt how hard it is to make a magazine and the difficulties faced when making a magazine.
Flat Plan-Front Cover
Here is flatplan front cover for my magazine. It has a mid-shot of HMK the artist which will be the main person for my Hip-Hop/Rap magazine.I have not decided on the colour of my magazine yet. Sample Photos
Here are the pictures I have taken today. These are a sample for me to get use to the camera. It showed me about the lighting and about the different features of the camera. I also learnt about how to take pictures from different angles. I also learnt about the angle of gaze and how that is important when taking the pictures and where the eye level should be. This will help when I will be taking photos for my music magazine and will give the skills I need to take photos best of my ability.

Important Codes & Conventions of a Hip-Hop/Rap Music Magazine
The most important codes and conventions of a music magazine based on my research are:
The colour used in a magazine are key feature of a music magazine because the colours are the first thing that the reader will look and if they are dull the reader won't pick up the magazine. have also learned that there are normally three to four colours used all through the magazine this is because it ,ales it easier to read for the reader and makes it look neat. The artist on the front cover are normally wearing the same colour clothes as one of the colour which links into the colour scheme. Every music magazine has a different colour theme this is because it gives it different and a distinctive look.
The picture which is used on a font cover of a music magazine front cover id normally a mid-shot( from the waist to the head) this is important because it show the reader the posture of the artist and how they are dressed but they can still be the facial expressions.the picture is also normally placed in the middle and starting from the heading all the way to the bottom. The angle of gaze on magazine is at the reader which can make the reader feels as the artist is looking at them.
The font is another important part of a music magazine because it has to look appealing to the reader for them to purchase the magazine so by using basic font such as Arial it will not attract the readers attention and they ,ay not purchase the magazine. Normally in a magazine one font is used all through the magazine but the font size changes only this is so it makes it easier for the reader or read the magazine.

Response from HMK
I recently asked an artist called HMK if he could help me with my media studies coursework. I have now received a reply and is excited as he said YES. I choose this artist as he is himself an hip-hop/rap artist and know all about the genre . He has preformed at the O2 academy many times and was the finalist at Oxford got Talent.
Possible artist from my music magazine
I have found an artist called HMK. He was the first person I thought of when wondering which artist I can arrange and ask to feature in my magazine. He is an upcoming Hip-Hop/Rap artist and loves his music. Here is a picture of him at performing at Chalgrove festival.
Flatplan Research
This week I am going to start planning design my flatplan. The thing I need to include and remember when designing my flatplan are:
- It must be as detailed as
possible with text and colour completed. It should look like your
completed magazine will do (apart from your interview).
- You should show how your research
has influenced the design of the flatplan and should include a minimum of
4 different images.
- The design can and will
change and adapt but you must always explain and justify these changes.
- At the end, the finished
magazine should be recognisable from the flatplan

In my survey I conducted I found out that people most likely to pay under £3 for a magazine. Also people purchase magazine by looking at the artist on the front cover so in my magazine I need to have a famous artist and it needs to cover the whole page. I also found out that when people think of hip-hop/rap they think of gangs, violence, girls, money, drugs and culture. So when making my magazine I need to include these things on the front cover and the content page. Most people like to know about the history of the artist. So I might have an interview from the artist on the double page spread. From my research people also buy magazines because of the features/cover stories so I also need to include it when making my magazine.

Target Audience?
· My primary target audience for Hip-Hop/Rap music genre would be :
Ø Gender: young males
Ø Age: 16-20
Ø Social Background: Lower and working class males, students in still in education and young males who are looking for a career in the Hip-hop/Rap industry.
· The secondary target audience would be:
Ø Gender: young females
Ø Age: 16-20
Ø Social background: Lower and working class females, students in still in education and young females who are looking for a career in the Hip-hop/Rap industry.
To attract these target audience I conducted some market research in the form of focus groups and questionnaire. The magazine needs to be for both set of gender so the front cover needs to look appealing both to both men and women, I will do this by having a large font size for the maskhead, the teasers on the front cover, I will also have famous artists concrete review. The magazine also needs to be inspirational to those people who are looking for a career and those who are interested in the Hip-Hop/Rap world, this will be by having upcoming artist, and there will also be information on music competitions and how to enter. The masthead needs to be appealing to both sets of gender, this will be done by using 3 main colours and having red as one of the 3 main colours the font needs to be bold so it can attract the reader.

Different types of Hip-Hop/Rap magazines
Here are a variety of different hip-hop/rap magazines. There are different in the font size, the amount of people on the front cover, the price and many other things. This data of different layout and differences in magazine will help me with the layout of my music magazine. Most of the magazines have 3 main colours which are red, white and black, and in most of the magazine red is used a lot. The angel of gaze is also straight and the artist is looking at the reader. Most common shots on the front cover are a medium-close up. There is also the artist name next to there picture, the name is normally written in bright colours so it attracts the customers to read the magazine.
